How to Create Arched Windows

This tutorial covers the making of an arched window using GMax using the "welding" method. I would like to credit Baco for his help with this tutorial. Enjoy! -by mntoes

Let's begin.

Draw 2 rectangles and an arc like so:

Next right click on both rectangles and the arc and convert each to an editable spline.

Right click on the rectangle for the window and add an edit spline modifier.

Select the rectangle for the window again, click the “edit spline” modifier”

Select the “+” next to the “edit spline”. Select “segment” pick the top segment of the rectangle ( in red here)

Choose “edit” from the top menu and select “delete”

You should now have this:-

Click again on the rectangle for the window and select “attach”.

Now click on the rectangle for the wall and the arc. These will now become one object. (Should all be the same colour?)

This is the important part!

Click on the “editable spline” and select “vertex”.

Now zoom in and select the “+” surrounded by a square at the end of the line for the arc. In the geometry roll out pick “Weld”.

Drag the green and red arrows until the +/square is over the “+” below (belonging to the rectangle). You should see:-

Select “yes” and repeat the same for the other side (you can only weld one point at once).

Now select the outer rectangle and add your “extrude” modifier and the amount of extrude (I use -0.4).

If you want more than one window you can always clone the window (after you have welded the vertex) then move the copy to where you want it. You could also use the array tool but I am still not quite competent at this yet, so it’s a case of just trying.

PS. clone the window before you attach it to the wall rectangle.

When it comes to the window frame you can follow Maxis Brian’s tutorial but do the top bit with an arc and attach it to rectangle window frame. It is up to you if you delete the top segment of the rectangle or not.

Hope this helps. I had to mess around for hours to understand this but finally got the hang of it.

Regards

Mntoes.
