What should we look for in SimCity 5? I don't about you, but I spent my childhood playing SimCity 2000 and humming along to that catchy "do-do-doodoo-do-ba-ba-da badaba" tune while reticulating splines, so I hope that puts me in a position of knowing a thing or two about city simulations. After looking at previous city building games, I've noticed a lot of what EA—since they bought out Maxis—could do.

The most important thing they can do is to be better than their competition. Not just better, but leagues beyond—the space shuttle compared to everyone else's paper airplane. Maxis used to be the only company in town capable of creating city simulators. However, that is long past, and other companies have stepped up to the plate. Maxis started the whole she-bang, and they must prove to us that not only do they still have what it takes, but that they can continue to be, not just a leader in the simulation market.

Very interesting article! I do hope (although I know it's very unlikely... *sigh*) that EA will listen to this guy if they make SC5 :)

Recently, I've noticed that more and more people have been talking about SC5. If Maxis/EA Listened, they should be creating the game at this moment in time. SC4 was a great hit and I've seen some stuff about 'It was just Luck how it came out so good' I dont want luck in SC5 if it comes out. I want to have Curved Roads from CXL and Proper Big Roundabouts without having to Install Anything.

I hope they do something with region elements. They show promise for things such as multiplayer, but they could use a bit of refining if implemented in a new game.

A multiplayer capability would be great. Perhaps it would work where there is a single massive; expandable map. Each player that joins the multiplayer mode would start off with one large city tile. Beside that tile would be neighbors; other players. You could buy additional city tiles and increase your land size. Other players could also buy land beside your city tile(s). You would be the only person able to edit the city, although others could drive through it.

My favorite part is how they missed on the 5 most important things that we (Simtropolis) actually want. :P

If we get a SC5 that doesn't expand on CXL's improvements (bridges, curved roads, no grid, etc etc) then the game will fail. They can't just take SC4 and add tweaks and fixes. Because it sounded to me like that's what the article's author was leaning towards--just make it less buggy and add nostalgia. Um, no... it really needs to be big and put CXL in its place (no disrespect to CXL, which gave players what they've been waiting years for to build). If SC5 is to be *the* city simulator, it needs to put CXL in a very distant second place.

I think you should be able to design some of your own buildings... in game, not on gmax or something, make it simple and easy to use! :D However... not to lower everyone's hopes, but it seems like these articles have been coming out for quite a few years now, and we don't really have anything to show for that. There's been no trailers or sneak peeks, but I sure hope it will come out one day, WITHOUT that annoying bug of the game taking forever to load and the constant bug CTD. That's just my two cents :P

My Requests:

Intergration of the URK - :circa SC3000, building buildings out of blocks, we completely build them from either wood or steel (anybody heard of Bridge-It or Pontifex? instead of using it to just make bridges, we could use it to make our buildings :)

ALSO, Street names extended labeling systems, e.t.c.

a last request that i can think of: instead of giving a box to build in,

ill just say it like this:
build a city
other towns arround the city
absorbable towns

U-Drive it's reincarnation
the return of the Big-Eyed ailen thing lol

and fade other towns and cities unti we get to the city limits: where the city will LOAD up, and fade the previous city.

I certainly hope that im not getting my hopes up for a game thats not going to be...

To be completely honest, I don't care if there's a new SimCity or not. I just want the current one to be made more stable.

It'd be far less taxing on the budget for people who's older computers would no doubt collapse under the weight of a modern PC game, as well.

You know what ive noticed?

In a dying pc world sc4 is always the oldest game on the shelf. That shows how great it is.
I cant imagine how anyone can out do this version ecspecially with all the work put im from people on this site.

I could honestly care less about a new sim city because SC4 is one of the longest lasting pc games out there.

But one thing that would be a cool addon is if you can use U drive it vehicles beyond the mayored city's limits and into the surrounding cities. Instead of the blue tiled void other cities would be visible. You just wouldnt be able to build in the surrounding cities.

I must say that the author's wish list is not my own most notably #3. I here game achievements I think like Xbox where you get an achievement for being able to turn the thing on. As far as an achievement system goes Simtropolis has the best model going with the community dishing out the praises and possibilities to the builders, designers and members for enriching the community.

I do agree with the stability but DLC for $$$ can take a flying leap.

you could get down to the nitty-gritty of what you want in a game, but for it to be a decent follow up, it needs some big things:

- it has to be an improvement on SC4. period
- it has to allow the community to be as creative as this one is now
- a more global focus, less US centric
- depth over flashy graphics

im sure IF they are considering a sequel, EA will be scouring the communities for ideas.

and another thing:

- they should get some of the best community contributors into developing it. by the fans, for the fans.

What SHOULD be a major part of SimCity 5 is a disconnection from The Sims. I could tolerate the occasional Simlish babble in SimCity 4, but couldn't stand the written Simlish in SCS. Sims players aren't SimCity players, and vice versa.

It should still be FUN, INFORMATIONAL, and without AGENDAS (like SCS had).

@Jigsaw: My biggest problem with SC4 was not it being American-centric, it was Southern California-centric. And to be more "global", they'd have to have more options or risk dragging down the whole program.

No multiplayer. SimCity 2000 Network Edition never really worked, CXL never really worked...

If EA decides to make a SC5, it will probably not live up to the community's expectations. When has EA ever done that recently.

As the article said, "Look at The Sims" (He probably forgot to put a 3 afterwards) when giving an example of a poorly made game. Again, the first 2 series were excellent, but the 3 series has been rushed and milked to death with skimpy and buggy expansions. (The Sims Studio is known to be working on multiple expansions at once, and have even reportedly started production of TS4, even though 3 still has 5 more expansions to go!)

I wish I could be wrong here. Unless Will Wright returns to EA to work on this and hires the NAM team and the best BAT designers out there, I'm afraid SC5 will be massive disappointment when it comes out.

Maybe the community should buy the rights for sc4 if they can then mod the exe.

I can remember there is a thread some where, where i suggested that the sim community buy the rights to SC4. I did some calculations i forgot what they were but we would have had a lot of money to buy SC4 and possibly even buy EA out.

I found the thread. It starts towards the bottom. http://www.simtropol...ch/page__st__30

I certainly wouldn't mind throwing in $200-$700 Canadian myself to buy the rights. I mean, it's not like EA will ever make use of them. They would make more money selling the rights than putting effort and dollars into a SC5 then trying to sell it.

SimCity 5 doesn't NEED to be everything when released. As long as they release a stable game with solid principles, everything will work out in the end. SimCity Societies and Cities XL will never really work out quite the way we want to...CXL was built on poor foundations, and unless CXL 2012 magically has all sorts of amazing modding tools and bug fixes, it will never be the city simulator we want it to be.

1. No to multi-player.. Who gets to be god? This game won't work with a group of Olympians.
2. No MySims/UDI. We don't play The Sims, so stop marketing it in this game.
3. Debugged and crash proof. This is just a matter of professional programming and putting the marketing guys in the closet and losing the key.
4. Open ended, and with a lot/building creation tool that doesn't need outside assistance.
5. Expand the regional capability. Regional airports, seaports, etc. Add intercity commerce, not just employment.
6. A more global aspect to development. Lose the Silicon Valley attitude. When creating a region, you should be able to specify where in the world it is, and flora and fauna should so adjust.
7. Multi-level water. Lakes, streams, water-tables. Off line weather could replenish.
8. Optional random disasters including earthquakes, tsunamis (on shore lines), volcanoes, lahars, mudslides, sinkholes, etc. Lose the science fiction.
9. Grid (and you'll need a grid) granularity should be smaller. A basic one by one lot should be no larger than 10 x 10 meters. Maybe even smaller. 16 meter frontage is a luxury lot.
10. Daytime activity for the "non-working" population. Mom takes the kids to school and goes shopping. Increases daytime traffic in business hours (0800-1800) Mom also picks the kids up. School busing would help alleviate this. Buses have a capacity of 41 people, and can run full, empty, or something in between.
11. More public buildings. Arenas, Curling rinks, etc. Better building selections and tile sets, especially if the climate can change.

Same here - but only if the game went 'open source' after the rights were received.
