Just saw an article that reminded me that after Holloween in Canada, the next event is Remembrance Day.  While our American cousins have theirs on May 1st (Memorial Day), here we remember the "truce" to end the "war to end all wars" at the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month.

Wear a poppy.

Memorial Day isn't the 1st of May, it's the last Monday in May. November 11th here is "Veterans' Day." Meant to honor all veterans, not just those who died.

Oops, sorry about that.  You have more holidays than we do.  Our remembrance day is for all veterans, living and dead.

So it's basically the same, just with a different name. Memorial day is specifically for those killed in war.

Remembarance Day is based around those who died in WW1. It is held on the closest Sunday to November 11, the day the armistice was signed. The poppy used as a symbol on the day is to represent the poppies in Flanders Field, and is associated with other war memorials.

I actually can't say I know the difference between veterans day and memorial day other than memorial day is geared a bit more towards the fallen i suppose.

You can never have enough holidays to honor the soldiers though.

Actually, the poppy was adopted by the Royal Canadian Legion as a veteran's symbol probably after the poem "In Flanders Fields" by John McRae. It has been quoted so often here, that I won't do it again. If you want the whole picture look up the title in Wikipedia.

The poppy is used globally, not just Canada/USA.

The poppy is used because it grew in the fields of Flanders, and it grows best on land that has been disturbed, you often see them on land alongside newly built roads here in Britain.

In two days time, you should remember the millions of men who have died in wars for all nations by attending remembrance services.

Not to hijack this thread..

Today in the UK and the Commonwealth is Rememberence Sunday; the nearest Sunday to Rememberence Day.
Each year there is a service along Whitehall. The Queen and the Royal Family, the Chiefs of Staff, and various politicians and veterans attend to the Cenotaph Memorial; along with thousands of citizens, to remember all of the dead; but specifically those fallen in World War One.

This year was a very special Memorial; it is the first year in history where no WW1 Veterans attended; the last four died last year.

Not a hijack at all, Boggy.  It's totally on topic.   Rememberences happen in different ways in different places but the idea behind it is the same.

In the US, one little touch that I like is that the NFL often does fly-overs at the stadiums on the Sunday before Veteran's day, which is today.   In DC, it's usually the Blue Angels; not sure about other places.

wow.   That is amazing when you think about it.  My grandfather was in WWI but he died back when I was in high school.

The History Channel on my cable service is running a week of rememberance and war history this week.  Last night they ran The Thin Red Line (Guadalcanal), today they are running The Longest Day (D-day).

Since I am pretty much of a shut-in these days, I find this very gripping.

In the UK on this weekend, major sporting events started with a minutes silence and the last post, with poppy logos on team kits. Some even had a laying of wreaths.

I'm not sure what the question is either.

I understood torontosubyway's use of    was to express sadness over the loss of life.  Which is totally appropriate for the topic.

Z77:  Very nice poster, but I am afraid the captions are a little mixed, to wit:

Bravery is the state of going into battle when you don't know what's likely to happen

Courage is the state of going into battle when you are scared out of your mind, but you go anyway.
