| "You Gotta Believe it!":
The late, great Harry Kallis |
| Oops. I realized the "You gotta believe it" quote was from another late, great member of the Phillies team. It was by Tug McGraw after the 1980 World Series win. |
PEDROOOOO!!!!~ It's worth stretching it to game 6 just to bring him into Yankee Stadium again. That's always fun. It will definitely be intresting to see the reaction again i wonder if it will be more negitive. Also will we see the good Pedro or the bad one? |

| Yea they bought it, yea they are the yankees and they are annoying, i hate them, and half their fans can't even name 4 different ways to get a player on first base [no, kissing is not one].
But you have to tip your hat to them. Baseball wouldn't be fun to watch if the yankees weren't good. And this championship is impressive, and also puts a nice little finishing touch on the careers of Jeter, Rivera,Posada and friends who haven't won a series in almost 10 years. |

Another WS bought and paid for. Sad. Well, what do you want? If the Yankees have money, do you expect them to not use it? New York is a huge market with no shortage of people capable of and willing to pay the ridiculous prices for tickets and concesions that pay the players's salaries. The Mets have a pretty high payroll for the same reason. Fair? Maybe not, but what do you want to do about it? Institute a salary cap? Yeah, the players' union will love that. Of course, you also have to step back here for a moment and not look at things through the lens of already hating the Yankees. The Yankees may have a much larger payroll than any other team, but I'll point out that, for 2009, the Phillies are also in the top ten (#7). So are the Red Sox (#4). And, of course, money isn't everything. The #2 payroll belongs to the Mets, and they're not known for their excellent performance. The #3 payroll belongs to the Cubs - yeah, they bought their way real far... ![]() Besides, let's look at the pennant winners from the past couple decades and compare their payroll positionins: 2009: NYY (1/30) over PHI (7/30) 2008: PHI (12/30) over TB (29/30) 2007: BOS (2/30) over COL (25/30) 2006: STL (11/30) over DET (14/30) 2005: CWS (13/30) over HOU (12/30) 2004: BOS (2/30) over STL (9/30) 2003: FLA (25/30) over NYY (1/30) 2002: LAA (15/30) over SF (10/30) 2001: AZ (8/30) over NYY (1/30) 2000: NYY (1/30) over NYM (6/30) 1999: NYY (1/30) over ATL (3/30) 1998: NYY (2/30) over SD (14/30) 1997: FLA (7/28) over CLE (4/28) 1996: NYY (1/28) over ATL (3/28) 1995: ATl (3/28) over CLE (9/28) 1993: TOR (1/26) over PHI (16/26) 1992: TOR (3/26) over ATL (11/26) 1991: MIN (16/26) over ATL (20/26) 1990: CIN (20/26) over OAK (10/26) Middle- and small- market teams can and do make it to the world series, and even win it. Indeed, six of those nineteen series (32%) were won by the team with the lower payroll. And, in 1994, the Montreal Expos had the best record before the season was cut short. Their payroll rank that year? #27. Second to last. Obviously having a fatter wallet enables you to attract more stars to your team because you can pay them more, which gives you a bit of an advantage... but in terms of actually producing results, it isn't everything - although it is something. Now, if one were to just say that it gives some teams an unfair advantage, they would have a plausible argument. But that's not what happens. Instead, for whatever reason, people specifically direct their ire at the Yankees and ignore the other large market teams. The Yankees had nearly 1.8 times the payroll of the Phillies this year, yes... but the Red Sox had 2.7 times the payroll of the Rockies in '07, and 1.5 times the payroll of the Cards in '04. So, if one is going to criticize the Yankees for "buying championships", one must, to be fair, also criticize the Red Sox. To criticize only the Yankees on that basis and, indeed, cheer for the Red Sox in spite of it is logically absurd and demonstrates the presence of a huge bias in the criticism. |

so the phillys went form #29 to 7 in payroll in one season? No, they went from #12 to #7 in one season. It's the Rays that were #29 in '08. For a raw number comparison... Phillies '08 payroll: $98,269,880 Phillies '09 payroll: $113,004,046 Also worth noting... the Yankees' payroll this year is actually a few million dollars lower than it was last year when they failed to even make the playoffs. (in case anyone's wondering where I'm getting all these numbers from, it's here) |

| Yea but most yankees fans aren't used to waiting ten years for championships since the first year they rooted for the yankees was 96'. [Or whatever world series occured during there youth]
Duke, the major flaw in your argument is that the Red Sox, Mets, and other large payroll teams all are within range of eachother, and then the yankees are extremely higher. In 2004, the yankees had a whopping 182 million dollar payroll. Second place was the red sox at nearly 60 million less, or the cost to field the milwaukee brewers 04' payroll twice. So yea, the Yankees are head and shoulders above the rest in terms of spending. Its also worth pointing out that the Yankees can go out every single offseason and add massive contracts to their payroll. Most teams, even the red sox to some extent, have to plan out long term sizable deals so that they don't add up. Some teams can barely handle one large contract. Yet year in year out, the yankees sign 2-3 large contracts. This offseason, the yankees gave out 3 contracts that for this year cost more than the entire Pittsburg Pirates opening day roster. And that list of world series teams means nothing. Notice the frequency of each small market team compared to big market teams? The yankees, red sox, and angels are in the race every year. It takes the rays, rockies, and marlins nearly a decade to build a world series team because they don't have the resources to maintain superstars and sign big free agents. The only solution really is a system similar to the MLS, where there is a set salary cap [80-90 million?] and then clubs are allowed one contract that is exempt from the cap. That way the yankees, sox, and friends can still be greedy pigs while the small market teams aren't hurt. |

So yea, the Yankees are head and shoulders above the rest in terms of spending. And Cy Young is head and shoulders above the rest in terms of career wins, but that doesn't mean Walter Johnson wasn't also a damn good pitcher. A salary cap would probably already exist if the players' union would allow it. Meanwhile, you can't hate the Yankees for doing something they're perfectly allowed to do. (well, you can, you're a Red Sox fan. But those who are not...) |
